Originally from the UK (London) I have lived in Israel for forty years (most of the time in Metar in the south of Israel). As a research student in the late 70's, early 80's, I studied for my Ph.D in the town of Durham in the north east of England, while living in Newcastle which at the time had a reasonable sized Jewish community. I would often cross the river to Gateshead for a weekly shiur, to buy kosher food and to visit with friends. It was the first years of our marriage and for the three years we lived there, we went to Gateshead every Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and I davened in the famous yeshiva (perhaps the only kippah srugah there!!). To this day, and despite the amount of time which has passed and the many different places I have davened over the yomim noraim, I hear the voice of Rav Matisyahu Salomon, then the mashgiach of Gateshead long before coming to America, leading the tzibur in Musaph, Kol Nidrei and Neilah and giving a mussar shmooze before the beginning of davening. The nusach, the intensity, the way he carried the entire yeshiva with him is something I can never forget and it rings in my ears every year as we approach these holy days. May the zechus of his tefilot stand him in good health and bring him to a full recovery רפואה שלמה בתוך שאר חולי ישראל. With greetings for a גמר חתימה טובה from ארץ ישראל.
